| NOVEMBER 2010 SHOW CHOSEN. The Society will present, for its November 2010 show "RED HOT
& COLE". This unusual musical traces the life and work of the great
Cole Porter through a series of parties, with all his best known hits and some
not so well known. We shall present this show in a brand new venue, South
Dalziel Studio One. This new studio theatre will be housed in what was South
Dalziel Church of Scotland church hall. More details soon. |
SUCCESS AT THE GLASGOW MUSIC
FESTIVAL On 16th March, with
some trepidation, the Society appeared on the stage of Glasgow's Royal Concert
Hall to compete for the first time in the Mixed Voice Choir section of this
well-established Festival. The renowned adjudicator Richard Deering awarded us
88% for our performance of "Ol Man River" and 89% for "You'll Never Walk
Alone" - tantalisingly just short of the topmost category. (80-89% nevertheless
represents "an excellent performance both technically and artistically" and of
this we feel proud.) Our MD, David Fisher, inspired us to enter the festival,
chose the pieces and rehearsed them over weeks, building up our performance
(and confidence). Sadly, he was struck down with illness and could not conduct
on the night. At the very last moment, our dear friend Cameron Merriweather
stepped in, directing us with all his skill and sensitivity. We were
accompanied by our AMD, Rebecca Keay, who had polished up our precision and
dynamic interpretation, which were especially praised by the adjudicator.
Rebecca will forever be Our Dynamic Ms. Keay. While offering
valuable advice for the future, the adjudicator praised our "Ol Man
River" for "a rich-toned harmonic texture with excellent male blending of parts
and melodic line" and "You'll Never Walk Alone" for "good control of the swing
rhythm with the suppressed tension of the opening allowed to swell to a
wonderfully affirmative ending: excellent planning". Would we go through it all
again? You bet!
